Can School Board’s do Anything About Common Core?

The short answer is a robust YES!  This question gets centered on the East Penn School Board race.  In the May Primary, conservative candidates Carol Allen and Chris Donatelli made a statement in their campaign literature that they wanted to oppose Common core and return to local control.  The Teacher’s Union backed slate and their political operatives immediately jumped on this and continue to this day.  The union operatives claim that Allen and Donatelli are naïve in that school board’s must follow the mandates of the state and federal governments.  While it is true that Pennsylvania has adopted Common Core and renamed it Pennsylvania Core Standards, there are many ways to blunt the negative impacts of this program and its effects on our children.

Carol Allen and Chris Donatelli have pointed out the following measures that can be taken by School Boards;

  1. Send information to parents about PA Core Standards/Common Core and explain what options they have about their children’s education. Even the School voicemail service could be used to send messages to parents regarding Common Core and legislation that parents could request their legislators to support.
  2. The Board can push back on the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA) to push back on the Pennsylvania Department of Education to opt the state out of Common Core Standards. This is now being done in several states.
  3. Create a Curriculum Committee and/or a separate PA Core/Common Core Standards committee to review the standards and advise the board about standards and the impact at the local level.
  4. The committee would review the textbooks to ensure the books meet requirements at the local level and suggest textbooks for purchase.
  5. The Board can draft resolutions to raise public awareness and work with state legislators to have the state opt out of the national standards.
  6. Help parents understand that they can have their children opt out of the testing and data mining!

As previously stated, there are a number of states that have witnessed the negative effects of Common Core on their children’s education.  TO SAY THERE IS NOTHING A LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD CAN DO ABOUT COMMON CORE IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE.  IT TAKES LEADERSHIP, ENERGY AND WILLINGNESS TO WORK HARD TO MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES.  One would think that all parents, taxpayers and teachers would want to address this?  After all, it is supposed to be for the children!
