Wolf’s Agenda Steals from Taxpayers for Public Union Benefit

Share

By State Representative Daryl Metcalfe

Daryl Metcalfe

The new governor, Tom Wolf, believes that he has a mandate to increase your taxes after defeating Tom Corbett last year! The old saying of, “Don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax that man behind the tree,” does not apply to Wolf’s tax-and-spend scheme because he wants a $4.7 billion tax increase that will raise everyone’s taxes.

He proposes to increase your personal income tax by 21 percent and your sales tax by 10 percent, in addition to creating a new tax on natural gas production. His tax-and-spend increases include a new cradle-to-grave approach, taxing diapers, caskets and many other items and services that are not currently taxed.
On the budget deadline of June 30, the Republican legislative majorities delivered a balanced, on-time, NO tax-increase budget to Wolf’s desk. Without even attempting to create an appearance of analyzing the over 200-page budget, including over 400 line item expenditures, the governor vetoed the entire budget less than four hours after receiving it!
If he would have done his job, then he would have found that 174 of the line item expenditures were the same as his proposal. The line item veto would have been an option for expenditures that he did not agree with, if he was interested in making a policy statement instead of a purely political one.
Prior to Wolf’s veto, a TV newscaster from WGAL reported, “Tonight Governor Tom Wolf is vowing to veto any Republican state budget that does not raise taxes.” And he did because we balanced the budget with no tax increases!
Last month, the National Association of State Budget Officers released a report that revealed Wolf’s proposed tax increases are more than the other 49 states tax increases combined! The report also placed Wolf’s plan for Pennsylvania in the top three largest spending increases but with no built-in controls for managing the growth of the budget.
Why is Tom Wolf so driven to increase the taxes we pay and spend money that we don’t have? Who benefits from Wolf’s tax increases?
The answer may be found in the actions of America Works USA. Last month, they launched an attack campaign of misinformation against me through a series of mailings and Internet pop-up ads. Recently, America Works USA also bought over $400,000 of cable and network TV time for a campaign across Pennsylvania, spending more than 50 percent in the Pittsburgh market, to mislead voters about Wolf’s veto of our Republican, balanced, on-time, NO tax-increase budget.
America Works USA is an arm of the Democrat Governors Association. They received $14.4 million last year from public sector unions and the public sector unions were their four largest outside contributors. Last year public sector unions gave Wolf $3.4 million for his campaign and contributed an additional $1.6 million to a Super PAC in support of Wolf.
Now the public sector unions believe it is their payoff time! They want Wolf to fill the public trough with your tax dollars so that they can feed at your expense through his redistribution of wealth schemes. They have been active in the halls of the Capitol and through email, advocating for the governor’s $4.7 billion tax increase budget, lobbying against changing the government-defined benefit pensions to defined contribution plans similar to the private sector, and opposing the privatization of the state liquor system.
The battle lines have been drawn and it is apparent that it is the public sector unions versus the taxpayer.
Last week, siding with the government unions, Wolf vetoed the NO tax-increase budget and vetoed the state liquor privatization legislation. In addition, this week he vetoed the pension reform legislation.
I stood up for the taxpayers by supporting a NO tax-increase budget, supporting state liquor privatization and supporting historic pension reform legislation.
The silent majority of taxpayers outnumber the government unions! Will you join me in becoming a member of a vocal majority to defeat the Wolf tax-and-spend schemes? Will you join me by sharing this memo with your family, friends and colleagues who are tired of the government spending what you have? Will you join me in the fight to stop this Wolf payoff to the public sector unions?
I stand with and will continue the fight to protect taxpayers!
