News Alert, LVTP is alerting the public about School Strip Searches of Students

Share

by the Lehigh Valley Tea Party

Strip SearchBethlehem School District is refusing to establish any policy prohibiting strip-search.  If you live in the Bethlehem School District, please sign our online petition.

If you’d like to help get word out, print our flyer and post it around town. (flyer is here).

If you are willing to help us distribute flyers in front of any of the Bethlehem Area schools, please reply to this email.

Issue Background (in case you missed it)
Do you think it is ok for school officials to strip search our kids?  We don’t.  Yet only 3 of the 17 Lehigh Valley School Districts prohibit School Administrators from conducting strip searches.  Some will tell you “Oh, we don’t do that”.  Oh really? Fine then, put it in writing.

You see, if there is no policy prohibiting a specific act, the administrators can do it.  In fact, that’s exactly what happened in Safford, Arizona twelve years ago.  A 13 year old girl, Savana Redding was instructed to remove clothing down to her undergarments and then told to unhook and shake her bra.  What were they looking for?  Prescription-strength Tylenol.

The case went to the Supreme Court which in 2009 found that her 4th Amendment rights had been violated, but the court did not rule that all such searches were unlawful.  Instead, they said that a search of a student should go only as far as the severity of the suspicion, and that it must consider the age and gender of the child.

We believe that no school administrator should be involved in a personal search.  If the situation warrants such a search, the school must have uniformed police conduct it, in a manner consistant with current law and police regulation.

Letters were sent to 14 Lehigh Valley School Districts today.  You can see the letters here.  If you are interested in helping us get this policy changed, please Contact Us.
