New School Director questions PA Youth Survey

commentator

Folks:

I am a newly elected conservative School Board Director in Boyertown.

Here in Boyertown, we had “raised a lot of dust” at a recent board meeting regarding the PA Youth Survey.
The Reading Eagle also had an article from the discussion we had on the PA Youth Survey or “PAYS”. Here is the link for the article:

One order of business that our community would like to see changed is our use of the PA Youth Survey. This survey gathers information that many see as totally impertinent to educating our children.

Some sample questions from the Pa Youth Survey are:

“how often do you attend religious services or activities?”,

“People in my family often insult or yell at each other”,

“has anyone in your family ever had a severe alcohol or drug problem?”,

“How easy would it be for you to get a handgun?”

The answers to these questions, and all the other questions in the survey, are no ones business!!!

The attached link provides a complete list of survey questions;

http://www.pccd.pa.gov/Juvenile-Justice/Documents/2013%20PAYS%20Survey%20(English).pdf

Some on our School Board feel that the drug related questions are needed to determine if we have a drug problem in our schools. I contend that the teachers, administration, and school nurses know this without a survey. I will ensure that the next time our children are going to be questioned with any survey, the questions will go home with our children. Parents will decide whether or not particular survey questions are appropriate for their children , not the School Board or Administration.

Bring this up under board comments; I am sure you will get things changed as well!

Thanks:

Clay D Breece
