From the Lehigh Valley 9/12 Project Tea Party–Individual Rights Action Committee

IF I WANTED AMERICA TO FAIL, I WOULD CHANGE THE MEANING OF THE CONCEPT OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS BY INTRODUCING COUNTERFEIT RIGHTS INTO THE CULTURE.

HERE THEY ARE AS THE DEMOCRAT PARTY PLATFORM OF 1960:

“1. The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation.

“2. The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation.

“3. The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living.

“4. The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home and abroad.

“5. The right of every family to a decent home.

“6. The right of adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.

“7. The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accidents and unemployment.

“8. The right to a good education.”

Now why are these counterfeit rights and why do they destroy real individual rights?

If you ask the question, “Who will provide these rights?” you must conclude that each right must be provided by the forced labor of someone else either by direct service or through taxation.

This would mean that the government has the right to force some people to provide material values for other people. There is no “right” to enslave, but to propose these material values as the Individual Rights in the Declaration of Independence would completely change the original meaning of rights.

So what does the Declaration of Independence guarantee? It guarantees the right to life, liberty, property and the PURSUIT of happiness.  An individual has the right to his own life, and his other property and he is free from the interference of the government and of other people as he pursues his life and his happiness. Rights are rights to action, not to things.

(You will find and expanded version of these ideas in Ayn Rand’s essay, “Man’s Rights”.)
