ECONOMIC RIGHTS DESTROY INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

Individual Rights are the freedom for each man to take the actions which are necessary for his physical survival and the pursuit of his own happiness on this earth without resorting to the initiation of physical force or fraud against another man. The right to act to acquire and own property is essential to having Individual Rights.  Understand that the first property you must own is yourself!

Now when did the meaning of Individual Rights start to change from the right (freedom) to act to the right to receive, i.e., economic rights? And why can’t there be a right to receive if there are universal Individual Rights?

To live a man requires food, water, clothing, shelter, tools, etc. all of which must be produced or gathered by someone. If anyone is forced to provide things or services for someone else, that person is not free.  That person is a slave.  So there is no such thing as an economic right.

The official announcement of the concept of economic rights was made by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941 in his Four Freedoms Speech to Congress. The four freedoms were to be worldwide.  The first two were freedom of speech and religion.  The third was freedom from want, i.e. economic rights.  The fourth was freedom from fear – to be achieved by worldwide disarmament.  Then, 19 years later in the 1960 Democrat Party Platform the following economic rights were enumerated:

  • (copied from Ayn Rand’s essay, “Man’s Rights” in “the Virtue of Selfishness”)

“1. The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation.

“2. The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation.

“3. The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living.

“4. The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home and abroad.

“5. The right of every family to a decent home.

“6. The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.

“7. The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accidents and unemployment.

“8. The right to a good education.” *

So today, in 2012, how many planks in the Democrat Platform have been achieved? Is the Democrat party an advocate of Individual Rights?  Is the Republican Party complicit in these so called economic rights?  Are these economic rights a major cause of our mixed economy?
