Letter writer challenges Congressman Costello

Share

RTW LTE 813-17

Editor,

The Reading Eagle coverage of Congressman Costello’s recent Town Hall’s failed to cover a key question I posed at his Berks County meeting. If Donald Trump succeeds in bringing off shore industry back to the United States it’s not going to come to PA. but to the 28 Right to Work (RTW) states. My question was, would you commit to supporting a national RTW law?

He responded with “You have to allow states to make that decision whether they want a RTW law or not. Here’s what he ignores

H.R.785 introduced Feb 1, 2017. Prime sponsors Congressmen King and Wilson, with fifty-three co-sponsors. Titled: National Right-to-Work Act. To preserve and protect the free choice of Individual employees to form, join or assist labor unions, OR to refrain from such activities

Article 1, Section 1 of Pennsylvania’s Constitution states, in part, “All men are born equally free and independent and have certain inherent and indefeasible rights among which are pursuing their own happiness”.

The 1903 Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision of Erdman vs. Mitchell held that “Under the declaration of rights of the Constitution of Pennsylvania, the rights of a workman is a right which neither the legislature or a trade union can take from him, and one which it is the bounded duty of the courts to protect.” Section 26 states, in part, “Neither the Commonwealth nor any political subdivision shall deny to any person the enjoyment of any civil right”.

So who is right? His congressional colleagues, the Constitution or my congressman?
