Pennsylvania Liberty Alliance President Answers Commonwealth Foundation Report

Share

PA Liberty Alliance President, Ron Boltz answers Commonwealth Foundation.

Jennifer,

I understand the “cheer leading” aspect of this email, and I don’t fault your organization for making a loss look like a win.  Indeed, I believe running this vote was a “win” as well, but probably for different reasons.  I don’t expect victories every time and I’m glad this vote took place.

That being said, what is frustrating to those of us who pay close attention and are heavily involved in politics is the continued glorification by CF of House leadership.  With a failure to get 26 “republicans” to vote for such a simple concept (and word has it many more were prepared to vote “no” to protect the unions if need be but were “allowed” to vote yes) as not using taxpayer resources to collect political money, I would hardly give props to House leadership.

I understand that leadership may not want to put it’s own members on record with a vote like this, but to say “this is not an easy feat” and calling it “strong leadership” is rather insulting.  Making “hard” votes and putting legislators on record, even those in your own caucus, is exactly what leadership is supposed to do.  Instead, it seems as though you’ve bought into the rhetoric that the caucus is leadership’s constituents rather than average Pennsylvanians being their constituents.  My concern is not that those in leadership maintain their positions by appeasing their perspective party members, and it shouldn’t be yours either.

If you want to praise someone for “leadership”, perhaps you should look to our military leaders.  Making it look as though some legislator, who works part time but brings in full time pay and has given his or herself benefits that most Pennsylvanians can only dream of, look like some kind of brave hero is disappointing.

CF needs to stop being concerned with keeping access to politicians and put more energy toward calling out those who need to be called out, regardless of party, and putting pressure on those who deserve it when need be, including House “leadership”.  I understand that CF is not a PAC, but maybe you should follow the lead of CAP, or if I may be so bold, the PA Liberty Alliance as a model for pressuring legislators into actually getting things done.

Sincerely,

Ron Boltz
