Speaker Announces May 15 Special Elections for the 48thand 178th Legislative Districts in Washington and Bucks Counties

HARRISBURG – Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) today ordered two special elections be held on Tuesday, May 15, to fill the vacant seats in the 48th Legislative District in Allegheny County and the 178th Legislative District in Bucks County. May 15 is also the scheduled primary election in Pennsylvania.

Turzai filed the writs of election, the formal document setting the date of the special elections, with the Department of State. Copies of the writs (attached) are also being filed with the Washington County Board of Elections and the Bucks County Board of Elections.

The vacancies were created by the Dec. 31 resignation of former Rep. Brandon Neuman (D-Washington) and the Jan. 1 resignation of former Rep. Scott Petri (R-Bucks).

Candidates for both offices will be selected by a process designated by their respective political parties, and the winners of the special elections will take office after the results are certified.

District offices of the former members will remain open under supervision of the House to assist constituents with issues or problems, and continue constituent inquiries already in progress. The offices will remain until a new representative takes office and decides how to manage the district.

The 48th Legislative District office information is as follows:

  • 1540 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131, telephone (412) 664-0035.
  • 2701 Main Street, Suite 5, Munhall, PA 15120, telephone (412) 476-3046.
  • 551 Ravensburg Boulevard, Clairton, PA 15025, telephone (412) 233-2505.
