Letter Writer Warns of Red Light Cameras

Share

To all Camera Promoters and Innocent Motorists in Pennsylvania:

Friendly reminder: 2018 is an election year. Take heed.

If logic decided policy in Harrisburg, state spending would be low, the budget would be balanced, the benefits of regulations would exceed the costs, and policymakers would guard against unintended consequences. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania government is largely impervious to logic, and the tragic results are obvious for all to see. Nowhere has this been more destructive than in the area of highway safety.

Consequences are the truest test of any policy. Around the world, speed cameras increase accidents, injuries and deaths. So Senate Bill 172 is a failure before it’s passed. Yet some in the Legislature charge on because of all the money to be milked from motorists. I mean tens of millions of dollars flowing into camera boosters’ pockets. Cameras = money, not safety.

The Pennsylvania Legislature could learn a thing or two from South Dakota:
“In the South Dakota House of Representatives, Democrats and Republicans agree on one thing: They do not want red light cameras or speed cameras operating in the state. By a vote of 69 to 1 on Wednesday, lower chamber lawmakers gave final approval to a photo ticketing ban that leaves no room for private companies to mail citations to residents.” http://thenewspaper.com/rlc/news.asp?ID=4329&m=print

Most of the time Harrisburg is far better at hurting than helping its citizens. Do the right thing and enact a photo ticketing ban.

DO NOT LIST SB 172.

Sincerely,
Tom McCarey Member, National Motorists Association
