Live Fire Exercises at Fort Indiantown Gap

Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) is hosting live-fire training in July between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m., including artillery training July 23-26, which may result in increased noise levels.  FTIG is the only live-fire maneuver military training facility in PA, and serves as the PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and PA National Guard headquarters. 

Constituent Highlight: Jennifer Scott, Progressive GrocerRising Star

Congratulations Jennifer Scott, of Middletown and the 48th Senatorial District, who was recently recognized as one of the top women in the grocery industry in the “Rising Star” division by Progressive Grocer, a national magazine and “voice of the retail food industry”!  Jennifer is a category manager for breakfast and baking at Giant Food Stores corporate office in Carlisle, where she has been employed since 2012.  Jennifer is also a member of the Middletown Area School District School Board.

Cedar Crest FBLA Receives Honorable Mention in Lead2Feed Challenge

Congratulations to the Cedar Crest High School Future Business Leaders of America team, Joseph Carpenter, Morgan Engler, Jaiden Melendezand Danna Torrenegra, who received Honorable Mention in their first Lead2Feed Challenge!  Lead2Feed was created by the Foundation for Impact on Literacy and Learning and Lift a Life Foundation to encourage students to lead, create and implement projects designed to meet a non-profit’s needs in their community.  The team, advised by Amy Sullivan, chose the Lebanon County Christian Ministries food bank for their project, donating over 3,200 pounds of food and toiletry items.

PennDOT Green Light-Go Program Funding Recipients

The PennDOT Green Light-Go Program provides funding for existing traffic signals’ operational improvements including light-emitting diode (LED) technology installation, traffic signal retiming, developing special event plans, monitoring traffic signals and upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies.  Recently, 70 municipalities were awarded more than $31 million, including the following in the 48th Senatorial District:

  • Swatara Township, Dauphin County: $195,880 for modernization of the traffic signal at Paxton Street & 28th Street and replacement of a failing traffic signal pole
  • Springettsbury Township, York County: $251,163 for detection upgrades to traffic signals at State Route 24 and Kingston Road and Eastern Boulevard, upgrades to Northern Way & Wolf Drive, and modernization of a traffic signal at Haines Road and Eastern Boulevard

Veterans Expo & Job Fair – August 28th in Camp Hill

Veterans’ Expo & Job Fair will be held on Tuesday, August 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Veterans, active military and their families at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg, 1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill.  The Expowill connect transitioning and retired Military members with benefits and resources available through local businesses and organizations, including community service providers, healthcare professionals, VA benefits counselors, education/training providers and business startup assistance, as well as businesses covering home improvement, legal services, finance, retirement living and insurance.  The Department of Military & Veterans Affairs will also have a Veterans Outreach Van, offering direct access to benefits information, and Barber Styling Institute will offer attendees free haircuts.

Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans Bonus Program

The PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is still accepting applications for the Persian Gulf Conflict Veterans Benefit Program, but only until August 31, 2018.  The bonus pays $75 per month for qualifying, active-duty service members, up to a $525 maximum. For personnel whose death was related to illness or injury received in the line of duty in Operations Desert Shield or Desert Storm, there is an additional $5,000 available to the surviving family. Service members who were declared prisoners of war may also be eligible for an additional $5,000.

To be eligible for the bonus, a service member must have:

  • Served with the U.S. Armed Forces, a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Pennsylvania National Guard
  • Served on active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations during the period of Aug. 2, 1990 to Aug. 31, 1991
  • Received the Southwest Asia Service Medal
  • Been a legal resident of Pennsylvania at the time of active duty service
  • Been discharged from active duty under honorable conditions, if not currently active duty

Since 2008, about 9,500 Persian Gulf Conflict veterans have applied for and received a bonus for their war efforts.  Individuals who received a bonus or similar compensation from any other state are not eligible.  To apply, visit
