Barletta Recognized as “Hero of Main Street” By National Retail Federation

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) was named a “Hero of Main Street” by the National Retail Federation (NRF), the world’s largest retail trade association, in recognition of his consistent support for policies important to the retail industry, including millions of small businesses.  The award was presented to Barletta by the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Retailers Association, John Holub.

“The overwhelming majority of retailers are small businesses, with more than 98 percent of retail companies employing less than 50 people,” Barletta said.  “As a former small business owner, I know firsthand how these companies create jobs, drive innovation, and give back to the communities they serve.  I look forward to continuing my support of the retailers who do just that in Pennsylvania and am proud to be recognized by these men and women as a ‘Hero of Main Street.’”

Retail is the nation’s largest private-sector employer, supporting one in four U.S. jobs or 42 million working Americans.  In Pennsylvania alone, there are 8,563 retail establishments that directly employ over 61,000 people and support more than 86,000 jobs.  In fact, if you lined up everyone with retail-supported jobs in the Commonwealth, they could stretch the length of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

“Retailers and consumers are feeling good about the state of the U.S. economy, and a big part of that is the result of lawmakers who have made economic growth and job creation a top priority,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “As a Hero of Main Street, Congressman Barletta truly understands that the decisions made in Washington have a real impact on local businesses and communities across the country.”

“Congressman Barletta is a true hero to Main Street,” said Holub.  “He clearly understands the critical importance of the retail industry and its impact on the economy of Pennsylvania.  He is truly deserving of this award.”
