FedEx Ground Opens Lehigh Valley Hub

FedEx Ground Opening

FedEx Ground is a Pennsylvania company that was looking at several states to construct this facility and chose to stay in Pennsylvania. FedEx is not simply moving jobs from one end of the state to the other. Instead it is choosing to stay here and grow here in Pennsylvania.

Today, I was afforded the opportunity to share in the celebration of FedEx Ground’s opening of its Lehigh Valley Hub.

The impact of this Hub will be felt well past this property.

I have been proud to work alongside Governor Wolf and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make this day a reality. It took a bipartisan effort to have a critical road transfer bill that I introduced into the Senate enacted so this project could move forward. Road transfers between the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and local municipalities happen routinely in Harrisburg for a variety of reasons.

Few such bills, however, will have the significant economic impact that this legislation will have for the Lehigh Valley and our entire Commonwealth.

This bill, which was signed into law as Act 11 of 2016 on March 30, 2016, transferred less than a mile of Willowbrook Road in Hanover Township Lehigh County to PennDOT.

My legislation was one small but important piece that has resulted in FedEx Ground moving forward with plans to construct a massive new distribution hub here in the Lehigh Valley on land formally owned by the Lehigh Valley Airport (LVIA).

FedEx Ground’s investment for this first phase of the project was projected to exceed $227.5 million for this 800,000 square foot distribution hub. It is expected that this initial phase will create 282 new full-time jobs over the next three years, along with 398 permanent part-time jobs. This Hub will also help retain 1,652 existing employees statewide.

And today is only the beginning.

It is anticipated that the project will be further expanded in a second phase to 1,100,000 square feet, consolidating some existing facilities, and create 3,000 new jobs for the community at full operation.

At final build out, this FedEx hub will be the largest FedEx facility in the country! Moreover, the presence of the facility will drive additional economic development opportunities throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Helping existing Pennsylvania companies grow is equally important to luring new companies to relocate here to ensure long term, sustainable economic growth for our region and our state.

An added benefit and equally important to the future growth of our region is the sale of the land for this project helped place the Lehigh Valley International Airport on solid financial footing. The proceeds of the land transaction were used by LVIA to pay down a significant legal judgment that threatened the financial solvency of the Airport.

A thriving airport will only serve to further enhance the prospect for continued economic prosperity throughout our regional economy.
