Safe Schools Grants Awarded in 48th Senate District

The PA Department of Education has announced $919,000 in competitive Safe Schools Targeted grants awarded to 39 school districts to purchase safety and security-related equipment, including student, staff and visitor identification systems, metal detectors, protective lighting, surveillance equipment, special emergency communications equipment, electronic locksets, deadbolts and theft control devices, and training in the use of security-related technology.

The following school districts in the 48th District have been awarded grants:

  • Steelton-Highspire School District, Dauphin County – $24,996.50
  • Annville-Cleona School District, Lebanon County – $25,000.00
  • Lebanon County Career and Technology Center – $22,810.00

School Breakfast Grants Awarded in 48th Senate District

As part of the School Breakfast Initiative, the PA Department of Educationwill distribute grants of up to $5,000 each to 151 schools across the Commonwealth to make breakfast available to all students and expand food options for children.  Schools utilize these grants to implement a breakfast program using an “alternative serving method” like grab-and-go, or breakfast in the classroom, and breakfast must be made available to all students in a school.

The following school districts in the 48th District have been awarded grants:

  • Central Dauphin School District
    • Chamber Hill Elementary School – $4,174.50
    • Swatara Junior High/Middle School – $5,000.00
    • Mountain View Elementary School – $4,174.50
    • Paxtang Elementary School – $4,174.50
  • Annville-Cleona School District
    • Annville-Cleona High School – $3,743.44
    • Annville Elementary School – $3,645.34
    • Cleona Elementary School – $3,645.34
  • Eastern Lebanon County School District
    • Eastern Lebanon County Senior High School – $5,000.00 

Steelton Borough Receives Early Intervention Grant

The PA Department of Community and Economic Development recently approved a grant in the amount of $89,100 for the Borough of Steelton.  The funds are provided through the Early Intervention Program and are to be used to provide financial assistance for the formulation and implementation of a financial condition assessment and five-year financial plan.  Projects such as this improve the capability of local governments to deliver services more efficiently and effectively, and to promote growth and community improvements.

PA Calls on FCC to Further Reduce Robocalls

The PA Attorney General, along with 42 other Attorneys General, are calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to take further action to stop the growing number of robocalls and spoofing calls.  In legal comments, the Attorneys General urged the FCC to adopt proposed rules on enforcement against caller ID spoofing on calls to the United States originating from overseas, and addressing spoofing in text messaging and alternative voice services.

The number of spoofed calls and the consumer financial losses tied to these scams has increased by nearly 50% in recent years.  Americans received almost 18 Billion scam robocalls in 2018, and they have increased in the U.S. by 57% from 2017 to 2018.  The FCC reports imposter scams have reportedly cost consumers $488 Million just in 2018.

OSFC Approves Low-Interest Loans for Lebanon County Fire Companies

The PA Office of the State Fire Commissioner has approved a low-interest loan for two Lebanon County fire companies:

  • Northern Lebanon Fire and Emergency Services, Inc. – $200,000 for the purchase of a 2020 Pierce Enforcer Pumper with 1,000 gallon tank and 1,500 gpm pump.
  • Weavertown Volunteer Fire Company 1 – $200,000 for the purchase of a 2019 Seagrave Maurader Pumper with 1,000 gallon water tank and 2,000 gpm pump.
