Remembering the Heroes of D-Day

On June 6, 1944, nearly 160,000 Allied troops—about half of them Americans—landed along a heavily fortified, 50-mile stretch of the French coastline. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded on the beaches of Normandy, but by day’s end, the Allies had gained a foothold to begin liberating the oppressed peoples living under Nazi tyranny.

On Wednesday, I was honored to welcome several Pennsylvania World War II veterans to the House floor as we commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

It is hard for me to put into words how special these moments are for me. All of these men and women are living legends who had the courage to defend freedom against all odds.

One gentleman kissed my hand and thanked me. Another veteran looked at me and I thanked him for fighting for our freedoms and told him that it is now up to us to keep it. Another told me that he fought in the Pacific at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.

To stand among all of these heroes is humbling. My prayer is that we will stand for all that they stood for and pass down all that was instilled into us of what it means to love God, love our country, and love our family.

May we never forget their bravery, heroism, and sacrifice.
