8th Annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence at Bethlehem City Hall on the Fourth of July, 2019

Share

Close to 50 persons from the Lehigh Valley showed up for the public annual reading of the Declaration of Independence adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting at the Pennsylvania State house in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776.  This historic short document provides the moral foundation of our nation’s existence proclaiming our 13 colonies becoming sovereign and freeing themselves from the King’s rule in a bygone era.  Many men have died to preserve its principles and continuing benefits to us.  Together with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, The Declaration of Independence may be counted as one of the three essential founding documents of the United States government.

The weather was perfect and the crowd was jovial.  Copies of the Constitution, bottles of cold water and flags were passed out to the crowd.  One Tea Partier and her husband were dressed in revolutionary style as she passed out Tea Party tea bags.  Members of the Northampton  County Republican Women’s group were in attendance.  The Leatherneck Nation (who work to benefit wounded combat veterans) were there in force.  All kinds and ages of people came to celebrate with many from the LV Tea Party.

After the pledge of allegiance and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, event host Tom Carroll introduced the event wherein 10 men each read a piece of the Declaration written by Thomas Jefferson.  These representatives from Lehigh and Northampton Counties included Emil Giordano, Dean Browning, Bruce Gilbert, Mike Garcia, Hayden Phillips, Matt Dietz, Scott Uehlinger, Lou James, Tony Simao and Glenn Eckhart.  Tom Carroll read the Preamble at the end, stating that it was one of the most known pieces of writing in the English language.  The hour long ceremony was a very moving and patriotic event which certainly instills pride in our nation’s founding as well as making us realize how similar too conditions are today to that conflicted time.  The press were encouraged to stand up and speak out the truth instead of being mouthpieces for those with a political agenda.  This is certainly a national need as well as local.

I would encourage anyone who has a love for his homeland and who is in the area next 4th of July to attend this nostalgic celebration of our nation’s heritage.  May God bless America!
