Senate Majority Policy Committee to examine school property tax elimination

Senate Majority Policy Committee to examine school property tax elimination

YORK – The Senate Majority Policy Committee will meet to examine possible routes to school property tax elimination. This workshop is being held at the request of Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York) and will take place on Tuesday, August 13, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Penn State York at the Pullo Center.

“Burdensome school property taxes are a major concern for the vast majority of York Countians,” Phillips-Hill said. “Since my swearing-in to the Senate seven months ago, I have made eliminating school property taxes a top priority and I’m grateful that Senator Argall and his committee will be coming to York County next month to explore ways we can achieve the ultimate goal of eliminating school property taxes for our overburdened local residents.”

“I can’t go to the grocery store or to a cub scout event without someone asking me when we’re going to get rid of this rotten tax,” said Majority Policy Chair Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks). “I have worked with many other senators to scrap school property taxes and create a dollar-for-dollar replacement, but I have never been met with so much special interest opposition. We came razor close to passing a bill when the Senate was tied 24 for and 24 against elimination, but the Lieutenant Governor cast his tie-breaking vote to kill the bill and continue the status quo. Our goal for this workshop is to look for ways to move this difficult issue forward—and sooner, rather than later.”
