Lehigh County Conservatives Score Some Big Wins in Primary Election

Share

Lehigh County conservatives scored some big wins in Tuesday’s primary election as many conservative favorites advanced to the general election.

Let’s begin by looking at the Lehigh County Commissioners race, moderate Republican Dean Browning was once again rejected by Republican voters at the polls. Many stated it was due to the 16% tax hike levied on county residents during his tenure as Chairman of the Lehigh County Commissioners. Additionally, some were turned off by what they viewed as a negative campaign run by Mr. Browning. They said Mr. Browning’s mailers appeared to distort the truth or in their opinion contained lies. Judging by the results of the election, it looks as if those tactics didn’t work for Mr. Browning to

Emmaus garbage charges, Truth or Trash?

Share

In the recent 2015 spring edition, Emmaus Newsletter; an explanation is given for the change in garbage pick-ups and rates in respects to garbage and compost.

I like to call it garbage vs compost; as these were two separate items whose costs were paid for in two completely different methods. Now it seems that the borough wants to combine it into one bill. Let’s see if the math adds up.

The garbage is paid for through the collection of the Refuse Bill. This bill is calculated based on a contracted price that gets approved by Emmaus Borough Council. The borough administration figures out how much to bill each customer based on this approved contract price and the amount of customers in the borough.

Done Deal, good or bad. Emmaus Buys Rodale Building

Share

It’s settled, the fact is a fact, good or bad; Emmaus Council just signed the contract to purchase a former Rodale office building located at 33 East Minor St. This commits the taxpayers to a potential $6,000,000 towards this Councils dreams of moving the borough offices and for some questionable reasons all the emergency services as well.

The present council wants to consolidate all government functions at one location by moving the ambulance, fire and police emergency services and offices to this facility that has only one entrance point and two major traffic restrictions.

Major concerns are the railroad crossing on Klines Lane right next to the only entrance point to the Rodale property and Minor St., the only other road bordering the

How the Emmaus Borough Manager saved a boat load of Big Bucks for the Taxpayer

Share

You heard right! Emmaus Borough Manager, Mr.Pepe, is saving Emmaus almost $1,000,000/year. in expenses on an ongoing basis!

How is that possible you ask? Well, read on and find out just how easy it was.

About three years ago the first step to this amazing accomplishment took place with the hiring of a new Borough Manager, Mr. Shane Pepe. Interestingly, he was Borough manager of Berwick, PA where in his first year he helped them go from needing to borrow money to make ends meet, to having cash reserves of $600,000; all this in a PA borough comparable in size and population to Emmaus but with only an operating budget of ~$4,000,000 yr. They also have full time Fire and police!

Emmaus Citizens

Did you receive proper notice about this multi-million dollar question?

The question we are talking about is the Borough Council’s action to purchase the Rodale site at Kline’s Lane for $3,000,000 and to spend another $3,000,000 in upgrades? If you are like most citizens of Emmaus you did not get adequate notice about this project that will have a major impact on your taxes and public services. Most alarming is the impact on public safety services.

Fortunately, enough citizens found out and packed the Borough Hall to hear the Council’s ideas. At the meeting it was presented that the Borough Council was going to purchase the Rodale facility and move all Borough Operations to the Kline’s Lane site. They plan to sell the current

Citizens United vs. FEC

Share

By Andrew Geissinger

Note: This article originally appeared in the Spring 2010 issue of The Lehigh Valley Commentator.

No sooner did the Supreme Court hand down its 5 – 4 decision in January 2010 in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission case than many major news organizations and most proponents of progressive political views began to treat us to extensive commentary on how extreme this decision was. Commentators frequently claimed the ruling will destroy democracy in the U.S. and allow virtually unlimited special interest influence in our elections.

Presidential Advisor David Axelrod’s comment is typical. Axelrod stated, “Under the ruling of the Supreme Court, any lobbyist could go in to any legislator and say, ‘If you don’t vote our way on this bill, we’re
