Look Around You: Do You Still Think America Won the Cold War?

By Timothy Daughtry at Townhall The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not represent the views of Townhall.com.

American teenagers march in the streets to gut or eliminate the Second Amendment, and our youth are increasingly comfortable with socialism. Conservative speakers are harassed and physically threatened on college campuses. According to many in positions of power, any difference in achievement or earning among various social groups is assumed to be evidence of discrimination or oppression of one group by another, and assumed to be grounds for governmental intervention. Our national borders are being worn away despite popular demands for border security. Much of what passes for news is

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ claim that federal intervention hasn’t improved outcomes for students is based on the most recent data. (Photo: Michael Brochstein/Zuma Press/Newscom)

COMMENTARY BY

Mary Clare Amselem is a policy analyst in education policy at The Heritage Foundation.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ recent interview with Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes” caused quite a bit of backlash from critics.

As my colleague Jonathan Butcher has written, “60 Minutes” ignored many of the facts about the state of education in America. Response to the interview drew quite a bit of criticism of DeVos and her policy solutions.

Bush, Obama Education Chiefs Differ Sharply From Betsy DeVos on Limiting Federal Government’s Role

“We have invested billions and billions and billions of dollars to try to focus on the lowest-performing schools, and the lowest-income students,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos says. “And yet the results for those students continue to, in most cases, decline.” (Photo: Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call/Newscom)

Four former U.S. education secretaries implicitly criticized the approach taken to failing public schools by President Donald Trump and his education secretary, Betsy DeVos, during a summit in Washington.

The Education Department secretaries under Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush implied during a panel discussion Thursday at the Reagan Institute Summit on Education that Trump and DeVos were acting to harm, not improve,

Since the Common Core national standards were dumped on American schools beginning in 2010, national and state education officials have largely either ignored or belittled parental concerns about the resulting deterioration of education. The establishmentarians are now reaping what they’ve sown.

With a vested interest in the success of Common Core, these officials have been dreading release of the 2017 NAEP scores (the National Assessment of Educational Progress, AKA the “nation’s report card”). As of Tuesday, the bad news is here.

The Raging Debate on Obama’s School Discipline Policy

Share

~ Liberty Planet

There is currently a raging debate going on in Washington, D.C. as Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is considering the fate of former President Barack Obama’s school discipline policy.

This policy, which effectively ordered schools throughout the nation to either make sure that African-American and disabled students were not disciplined more often than other students or face loss of federal funding and/or a federal investigation, has been welcomed by civil rights organizations, teacher unions and many teachers and parents. However, a large number of both parents and teachers fear that it is making schools less safe and creating an educational environment that makes it impossible for children who want to learn to do so.

“The last thing we want to see is another mandate from the federal level,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos says. (Photo: Michael Brochstein/ZUMA Press/Newscom)

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos spoke exclusively to The Daily Signal’s Rob Bluey for an on-camera interview at the Reagan Institute Summit on Education on Thursday. This week, the Department of Education released what’s known as the “nation’s report card.” DeVos addressed its disappointing results and how the Trump administration is pursuing reforms to improve education in America. The full video and an edited transcript of the interview is below.

Rob Bluey: Thirty-five years ago, the Reagan administration issued its “A Nation at Risk” report. Here we are 35

Educational Freedom Discussion begins at: 2:56:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag6moV-i3Iw at 2:57:50 we hear a Board Director advocate support for a resolution preventing poor families from getting help from the state, in order to get out of failing schools. She was admittedly proud that she spearheaded this effort. at 3:02;21 My comments: It is increasingly challenging for our constituents to know whether the information we have about certain key issues is really complete. This BILL is not in committee nor is it in the pipeline to be brought into committee. No details on implementation, or any specifics at all have been defined at
