Senator Mike Folmer Column: “It’s About the Kids”

“It’s about the kids.” From the time I was first elected to the General Assembly, these are the words I’ve been hearing about education: “it’s about the kids.” The drumbeat became louder during my tenure as chair of the Senate Education Committee: “it’s about the kids.”

A recent decision by the Pennsylvania Department of Education has me wondering about what’s most important to education: is it really “about the kids?” I’m especially concerned about the education of approximately 335 students within my District who live in Highspire.

In 2014, Highspire residents initiated action to move students from the Steelton-Highspire School District to the Middletown Area School District. Their argument was such a transfer would be in the best educational interest

Walkouts Assault Liberty in More Ways Than One

Students and teachers were punished for not submitting to leftist groupthink.

By Robin Smith · at The Patriot Post/

Liberty-loving Americans must make a commitment to be active in demanding government that honors the constitutional rights of its citizens, and we must work to that end ourselves in our communities.

While the next few paragraphs will analyze the recent student walkouts in support of gun laws, proceed with the frame of mind that the rights of Americans — the fundamental ingredients of a free people — are in danger. This is neither fear-mongering nor hyperbole. All the evidence supports that those of us who love Liberty must immediately rise to the occasion to be guardians of that Liberty — or be the generation

The U.S. military is competing across the services and with the private sector to employee service members amid a contracting field of qualified recruits, the Navy secretary said on Monday.

“Depending on what article you read, the number of potential applicants that would successfully qualify for our services range somewhere from 25 to 30 percent,” Sec. Richard Spencer said in remarks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

A stroll through the beautiful ruins of American public education

By Bruce Deitrick Price at Renew America

Q: What is your main feeling about K-12 education today?

A: Sadness. There is a perennial waste of energy and money, both taken in great quantities from millions of citizens. Instruction, if logical and systematic, can teach a great deal in a timely way. Instruction, if incoherent, will leave students worse off than when they started. That is why McKinsey and Company, circa 2007, concluded that American students are measurably worse each additional year they remain in the public schools. Our #1 job is stopping this waste.

Q: So what is the big sin?

A: The Education Establishment concocts new ideas that are presented to the public as panaceas, as the ultimate and final

Report: Broward County Schools Embraced Obama Policy To Avoid Arresting Criminal Students, Allowing Parkland Shooter To Slip Through Cracks

ByBen Shapiro at The Daily Wire

According to Paul Sperry of, the Parkland, Florida school shooter was able to escape scrutiny despite dozens of red flags, including dozens of reports to police and at least two reports to the FBI, thanks to Obama administration policy dedicated to preventing the arrest of troubled students. Sperry writes:

Documents reviewed by RealClearInvestigations and interviews show that his school district in Florida’s Broward County was in the vanguard of a strategy, adopted by more than 50 other major school districts nationwide, allowing thousands of troubled, often violent, students to commit crimes without legal consequence. The aim was to slow the “school-to-prison pipeline.”

Turning Teachers Into Psychotherapists Will Not Prevent School Shootings

by Karen R. Effrem, MD at The National Pulse

In the rush to “do something” to respond to the horrific and tragic Parkland shooting in Florida, a Florida Senate committee considered bills on Monday that greatly expand mental screening and profiling of students, “harden” security at schools, fund more school resource officers, and arm teachers and others that volunteer and undergo extensive training and criminal background checks as well as a psychiatric evaluation. These were recommendations that came from three task forces put together by Governor Rick Scott that met last week.

The gun control debate and proposal to arm teachers dominated the discussion while the very dangerous and problematic mental health proposals went through unnoticed. These proposals include:

School Shootings: Are Today’s Schools the Cause?

The Word of God teaches us that the education of the next generation is the most critical work to be accomplished in a society. It is so critical that God gives very specific directions for who is to do this work as well as how it is to be done. DAVID WHITNEY — freedomoutpost.

The evidence is in – Gun Free Zones do not work. The criminal knows that gun free zones assure him a safe working environment; he need not fear that anyone will fire back at him. A gun free zone is also another name for a soft target, and murderers are cowards, they always seek soft targets. For example, the

When Activism Replaces Education: The Rise of New Civics

So-called New Civics programs seek to replace traditional civics education with “service learning.”

By Caroline C. Lewis · at The Patriot Post/

The modern American university has increasingly become a place of walk-outs, demonstrations and protests. Students appear to spend more time waving signs and yelling their opinions across the quad than actually studying in the library. It seems that education has been replaced with activism. Because it has.

A report by the National Association of Scholars (NAS) reveals the infiltration of so-called New Civics programs that seek to replace traditional civics education with “service learning.” The report notes, “Instead of teaching college students the foundations of law, liberty and self-government, colleges teach students how to organize protests, occupy buildings and stage
