Are Pennsylvania Schools Underfunded?

Share

Are Pennsylvania Schools Underfunded? You’ve heard it as a question, an accusation, and a justification for tax hikes. So what’s the truth? Senior Policy Analyst James Paul asked—and answered—this question and tackled other popular school funding myths in a recent op-ed that appeared in more than 15 newspapersacross the state. If you haven’t read it yet, check it out below…

Are Pennsylvania’s public schools underfunded?

That’s been the central question in Pennsylvania politics for a half-dozen years. But from Gov. Tom Corbett’s first budget to Gov. Tom Wolf’s election—and since—myths have dominated the debate.

During his campaign, Wolf ran on the myth that his predecessor “cut $1 billion” from public schools. The reality, however, is federal funding always known to be temporary expired. Those

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro talks about diversity despite a disruption when protesters at California State University, Los Angeles blocked entrances to the event in an attempt to shut it down. (Photo: Jacqueline Pilar/Young America’s Foundation)

Student protesters swarmed California State University, Los Angeles to barricade the entrances of a theater where conservative commentator Ben Shapiro was set to deliver a speech about censorship and diversity on college campuses.

Led primarily by the school’s Black Student Union and Black Lives Matter chapter, the hundreds of demonstrators, including some professors, poured into the Student Union building Thursday afternoon to block other students from attending the event.

The Weekly Roundup Friday, March 04, 2016 The latest news from the State Capitol School Closures Part of Wolf’s Tax Strategy With several Pennsylvania school districts on the verge of closing due to Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget cut of $3 billion in state education funding, the administration has sent a school closing checklist to help schools shut their doors. That action is completely unnecessary as the governor has it within his power to ensure that schools are funded and stay open. When the General Assembly sent a budget to the governor’s desk in December, schools were set to receive a historic level of state aid, until the governor vetoed several education line items, including half of the allocation schools

Are Teachers Unions a State Agency?

Share

From Eagle Forum–Education Reporter

On January 11, 2016, lawyers for ten California teachers who don’t want to pay fees to a union that uses their money to support candidates and positions with which they disagree presented their oral arguments to the Supreme Court. They say forced payment results in a violation of their rights to free speech and to free association. The ruling will have far-reaching affects because teachers unions in 23 states collect compulsory union fees from all teachers, whether they choose to be union members or not. In the remaining states union membership and fees aren’t mandatory.

How Common Core Ended the Bush Dynasty

Share

By Phyllis Schlafly at Eagle Forum

As Republicans try to make sense of Donald Trump’s huge victory in the South Carolina primary, the big news is the shellacking of Jeb Bush in a state that voted four times for a George Bush for president. Trump defeated Jeb by the overwhelming margin of 4-to-1 (33% to 8%).

When Jeb suspended his presidential campaign following his humiliating rebuke by South Carolina’s Republican voters, it was more than just a personal disappointment. It marked the end of the Bush family’s 25-year campaign to remake public education according to federal standards

The Commonwealth Foundation’s Weekly Update

Dear CF Friend,

Allentown School District is in dire financial condition. Hundreds of teachers have been laid off in recent years. Despite this, the union president manages to pull a full-time teacher’s salary and benefits from the district payroll without teaching one minute in the classroom.

For years, Allentown taxpayers have funded salary and benefits for a “ghost teacher” who is on district payroll but actually works full-time for the local teachers’ union. Since 2000, the cost to taxpayers has been more than $1.3 million.

Last week, taxpayers Scott Armstrong and Steven Ramos filed a lawsuit with help from the Fairness Center to end this
