What Happened to the “M” in STEM?

By Lois Kaneshiki

At the December meeting of the Hollidaysburg Area School Board, on which I serve, I voted against a proposal for 8 new high school- level science and technology elective course offerings in our district. Why would I do that? After all, we live in the new “STEM” world, where encouraging our kids to enter these important fields in science, technology, engineering and math, is a high educational and societal priority, right? Allow me to explain.

Common Core standards have been the bane of parents’ and students’ existence for the past several years. Recent NAEP (The “Nation’s Report Card”) scores have shown a decline in student achievement for the first time, several

Some universities have refused to discuss where strings are attached to that money. The Qatar Foundation, for example, filed a lawsuit against the Texas attorney general

Incoming Democrats Take Aim at Education Secretary Betsy DeVos

~ Patriotic Freedom Fighter

Democratic members of the House of Representatives are eager to use their new majority in the coming year to stymie President Trump and his agenda. One particular cabinet member they are singling out for harassment is Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who has committed the seemingly unforgivable crime of actively dismantling Obama-era education policy. A number of powerful House members have her in their sights and are looking forward to grilling her as soon as they gain control over key committees.

Three of Secretary DeVos’ policies that have received the most opposition from Democratic politicians and activists are the student loan forgiveness process, the rollback of regulations targeting for-profit colleges, and the Education Department’s rewrite of campus sexual assault policies.

Are ADHD rates rising because we send children to school at younger ages?

By Kerry McDonald

Kerry McDonald is the author of Liberty to Learn: Why Children Need Self-Directed Education, a free eBook published by FEE.

Every parent knows the difference a year makes in the development and maturity of a young child. A one-year-old is barely walking while a two-year-old gleefully sprints away from you. A four-year-old is always moving, always imagining, always asking why, while a five-year-old may start to sit and listen for longer stretches.

Growing Expectations vs. Human Behavior

Children haven’t changed, but our expectations of their behavior have. In just one generation, children are going to school at younger and younger ages, and are spending Continue reading…
