Senate committee approves local lawmakers’ measure to improve safety for household goods movers

HARRISBURG – The Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee unanimously approved a proposal sponsored by Representative Gary Day (R-Lehigh/Berks) to strengthen penalties on illegal household good movers.

The bill, House Bill 1769, is identical to a proposal authored by Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) that passed the Senate unanimously last October.

Under Argall and Day’s legislation, household goods movers operating illegally in Pennsylvania would be subject to a $5,000 fine and a third degree misdemeanor. Vehicles used in the illegal move would be confiscated and registration would be suspended. Repeat offenders would be subject to a $10,000 fine.

Monday, October 17, 2016

Dear CF Friend,

Today kicks off the last two weeks of legislative session this year. Here’s what you need to know about some key issues we’re watching.

Pension reform. The House and Senate may soon come to a pension agreement, combining the House’s stacked hybrid plan with the Senate’s side-by-side hybrid. Check out Elizabeth Stelle’s latest blog recapping the road to pension reform.

Vape shops saved? The House could vote this week to repeal and replace the 40% retroactive tax on vape shop owners, meaning the Senate could pass this bill and send it to Gov. Wolf as early as next week. This tax has already forced dozens of shops across Pennsylvania out of business.

It’s Bush’s Fault

By Rich Shuker

The Democrats – Bill Clinton – and Wall Street wanted deregulation passed. One of the top donors to Clinton’s campaign was Goldman Sachs (still is, only now they give to Hillary – pay her huge speaking fees).

Because of Bill Clinton’s economic program, from Jan, 2000 to Nov, 2002, Clinton caused a 37% S&P market drop. Bush reversed it and stopped the Clinton recession. By doing this, the market gained 35% up thru 12/2007. Democrats then took control of the House & Senate, caused the market to collapse 50%.

As for how Reaganomics helped middle America, per the IRS, in 2000 the average wage was $55,608, but thanks to Clinton’s tax increases the average wage

Justice Clarence Thomas, the second black man to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, is practically absent from the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Anita Hill, the woman who accused Thomas of sexual harassment, however, is given prominent billing in the museum.

The new Smithsonian, which opened in September, gives Hill pride of place in an exhibit on blacks in the 1990s. The exhibit features testimonies trumpeting her

Senate reviews college student loan debt–Senator Dave Argall’s report

HARRISBURG – Leaders from the state’s largest student financial aid servicer and higher education institutions provided members of the Senate Majority Policy Committee and the Senate Education Committee with proposals to better educate the public on student loans during a public hearing held at the state Capitol Monday morning.

“Students across the state continue to struggle with rising education costs and many are forced to take out student loans,” Senate Majority Policy Committee Chairman David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) said. “Today’s hearing provided the committees with a broader understanding of what is occurring at various higher education institutions and through student loan services in order to provide both students and parents with the information necessary to make informed financial decisions.”

Genevieve Wood advances policy priorities of The Heritage Foundation as senior contributor to The Daily Signal.

In review, by the LVC Editorial Staff, this video shows what the GOP bi-partisan accomplishments were in 2015. Recall the definition of bi-partisanship: “In America, we have a two-party system. There is the stupid party, and there is the evil party. Periodically, the two parties get together and do something that is both stupid and evil. This is called bipartisanship.” LVC Staff
