Ali Meyer is a staff writer with the Washington Free Beacon covering economic issues that expose government waste, fraud, and abuse.

If Congress were to cut unnecessary and ineffective spending in the federal government, it could balance the budget in one year by following the recommendationsput forth by Citizens Against Government Waste, a non-partisan organization.

The report, titled “Prime Cuts 2016,” outlines 618 recommendations to cut wasteful government spending that would not only balance the budget within one year but would save taxpayers $644.1 billion in the first year and $2.6

11 Million Spent Half of Their Income on Rent. Why the Government Is to Blame.

Patrick Tyrrell is a research coordinator in The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis.

A recent report out of Harvard University has found the number of struggling household renters at an all-time high. A table in the appendix of the report shows that almost half (49.3 percent) of renters in 2014 spent at least 30 percent of their household income on housing costs.

Why are so many spending so much?

The report acknowledges that part of the blame for the high rent falls on “local land-use regulations—such as zoning requirements, density and height restrictions, and minimum lot

Why are government employees still getting paid on official time to do union work?

By Nathan Mehrens at NetRight Daily and Americans for Limited Government

Will Rogers is reported to have once said, “be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.” While there are certainly many areas where we’re not getting what we pay for, one area where the problem is particularly acute is in an obscure federal personnel practice known as “official time.” Official time is a practice where a government employee is paid, not to do work for you as the taxpayer, but rather to work for the union representing the employees at the agency which employs this individual. The employee keeps their federal position, title, and all the benefits that go with being a federal employee, but works for

Mike Lee is a Republican senator from Utah.

Since the horrific terrorist attack in Orlando, Florida, nearly two weeks ago—the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001—Congress has been engrossed in a debate about what can be done to prevent something like this from happening again.

Unfortunately, many of members of Congress believe that those four words—“something must be done”—give the federal government permission to do whatever it wants.

In their grief

Review: ‘The War on Cops’ by Heather Mac Donald

Officers and protesters face off in Ferguson, Missouri / AP

Tom Rogan, based in Washington, D.C., writes for National Review and the Daily Telegraph.

Police officers across the United States are shunning interaction with their communities, and violence is increasing in those places. These are Heather Mac Donald’s two main contentions in her passionate, widely sourced book, The War on Cops.

Mac Donald begins in Ferguson, appropriately. Assessing the August 2014 violence that broke out there following the police shooting of a black man, Michael Brown, Mac Donald explains how officers

Supreme Court Strikes Down Texas Abortion Law, Dooms Women to Substandard Care

June 27, 2016

Washington, DC – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court took a dangerous step backwards by striking down provisions of a Texas abortion law that provided that abortion providers maintain hospital privileges and meet ambulatory surgical center standards. The decision was 5-3 in Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt, which challenged HB2, a sweeping Texas abortion licensing and safety law.

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling has essentially relegated women to second-class citizens when it comes to abortion
