With Mass Shootings, the State Makes Us Less Safe

By— Justin Murray at Mises Daily

In the wake of last month’s shooting at Umpqua University in Oregon, national debate has once again been sparked over the role of firearm controls. Gun-control laws must be passed, we are told, that target these events and reduce or eliminate their frequency. However, much like most debates in the political realm, convenience and sound bites take the center stage over understanding root causes of violence itself. The debate is further confused by improper data comparison and information gathering techniques, mainly to drive a pre-designed political agenda and not to attempt to solve the homicide problem.

Before we get into the issue of general homicide, it is important to clear a few

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking records related to letters sent by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to current green card holders urging individuals to become naturalized U.S. citizens prior to the 2016 election (Judicial Watch v. I’ll see you in court–the costly abuse of eminent domain

Share

By at the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity It’s bad enough for a local government to use eminent domain to seize personal property, but it’s even worse when that land grab happens immediately through an expedited process known as “quick-take” eminent domain. In public projects involving the “making or repairing” of a road, local government can take possession of a disputed property immediately after it files for eminent domain. The case does not have to go through the normal court process.

This was the situation facing two Ohio homeowners. In October, they suddenly found their front yards in jeopardy as the city of Perrysburg, Ohio tried to grab their property

Why Are Mexican Immigrants Voting In Texas?

Share

by Andrew McNealy – at Citizen Action

A Texas woman has just been indicted by the Tarrant County Grand Jury—for voting illegally in regional elections.

While Mexican national, Rosa Maria Ortega, 35, of Grand Prairie, Texas is here in the United States as a legal immigrant, she’s still not eligible to vote since she’s not an American citizen. Immigrants, regardless of legal status, are not allowed to vote anywhere in the nation.

Open borders Are an Assault on Private Property

By — Llewellyn H. Rockwell Jr. at Mises Daily

This talk was delivered at the Mises Circle in Phoenix, AZ, on November 7, 2015.

Whether we’re talking about illegal immigration from Mexico and Central America, or birthright citizenship, or the migrants coming from the Middle East and Africa, the subject of immigration has been in the news and widely discussed for months now. It is an issue fraught with potentially perilous consequences, so it is especially important for libertarians to understand it correctly.

This Mises Circle, which is devoted to a consideration of where we ought to go from here, seems like an opportune moment to take up this momentous question.

I should note at the outset

Nanny State of the Week: Connecticut town considers gun range ban

Share

By / At Watchdog

Residents of one Connecticut town are up in arms over a proposal to ban gun ranges.

The local planning commission for Plymouth came under fire last week for considering the ban, which was prompted by an application for a permit to build a range. That applicant has already withdrawn the application in the face of public opposition to building the range, but that’s not enough for some residents and members of the local government.

According to Fox-61 in Connecticut, local resident George Porter hired an attorney to help draft a change to the town’s zoning laws that would prevent anyone from ever building a gun

Judicial Watch Asks Appeals Court to Halt Race-Based, Separatist Election in Hawaii

From Judicial Watch

State Uses “One Drop of Blood” Rule to Define Voter Eligibility in “Native-Hawaiian”-Exclusive Vote

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that it has filed an Urgent Motion for Injunction with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to stop a race-based, state-sponsored, Hawaiians-only election that violates the “fundamental constitutional rights” of American citizens (Keli’i Akina, et al. v. The State of Hawaii, et al. (No. 15-17134)).

The motion asks that the Appeals Court enjoin the counting of ballots, now scheduled for November 30, until the resolution of a Judicial Watch appeal of an earlier district court ruling in the case (Keli’i Akina, et al. v. The State of Hawaii, et al. (No. 1:15-cv-00322)).

When You’re Popular, You Don’t Need Freedom of Speech

Andrew Syrios at Mises Daily Free speech is not something that people would normally see as a realm of economics, but in many ways, an economic understanding of the support and opposition to free speech can shed a lot of light on what’s happening now in the West. Now, some of this is certainly good, such as the shifting views on marijuana legalization. Some is troubling, such as the growing popularity of socialism. Regardless though, the left, having ascended to cultural dominance, is no longer in need of free speech. After all, no one ever got in trouble for agreeing with the conventional wisdom. As Noam Chomsky said, “Even Goebbels
