Rand Paul blasts PATRIOT Act Surveillance on Senate Floor During Last Minute Debate (UPDATE: USA Freedom Act Moves Forward in Senate)

Share

by Scott Shackford at Reason.com

“Get a warrant!”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) took to the Senate floor Sunday afternoon as debate wrapped up to reiterate, very, very loudly, his opposition to renewing the mass data collection authorities of Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act. He had argue with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) over Senate procedures first to get permission to speak. McCain, for his part, argued that the increase in terrorism (he said the Middle East is literally burning) is proof that we need Section 215 “more than ever,” despite the lack of evidence that the mass collection under Section 215 actually contributed in any successful efforts to halt terrorist attacks.

Paul noted that “the

Judicial Watch: TSA Records Detail Alleged Sexual Assults of Travelers at Three U.S. Airports

Share

by Judicial Watch

Judicial Watch announced today it obtained 58 pages of records from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that detail alleged sexually-related assaults on passengers by TSA personnel at three major U.S. international airports. The documents describe incidents at Denver International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The documents were released in response to a July 11, 2014, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security (No. 1:14-cv-01179)). The lawsuit was filed after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) failed to respond to a March 5, 2014, FOIA request seeking:

Any and all passenger complaint forms (referred to as “yellow cards”), “To From” memoranda and Incident Reports filed in 2013

LVC Editor’s Note; this is an article from the Lehigh Valley Tea Party. The Lehigh Valley Commentator is not endorsing nor condemning an Article V Convention. We present this explanation for our readers edification. The LVC may present it’s views at a later time. We welcome our readers opinions both pro and con on this important subject.

In the transcript of his first inaugural address in 1789, George Washington stated, “The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of

Time For Congress To Stop D.C.’s Anti-Gun Shenanigans

Share

by Bob Barr – at Citizen Action

Since the landmark 2008 Heller v. District of Columbia case, which Second-Amendment lawyer Alan Gura argued before the Supreme Court, anti-gun officials in the nation’s capital have spent every waking hour trying to avoid doing what the high Court ordered be done: allow District residents to exercise their right to keep and bear arms.

Gura has been fighting them every step of the way; and on Monday, was victorious once again, as a United States District Court granted his injunction to stop the city from requiring concealed carry permit applicants to demonstrate a “good reason to fear injury to his or her person or property or has any other proper reason for carrying a pistol.”

School district waves white flag, allows patriotic flags on student’s truck

Share

by Tom Balek at Watchdog

“There’s that truck again,” I remarked to my wife. I always had to smile when I saw the black GMC ride by with the big flags flapping in the wind.

Peyton Robinson, a senior at York Comprehensive High School in York, S.C., has been driving his truck around our end of York County with two large flags attached to the bed – an American flag and one that honors military servicemen and women who have been taken as POWs (prisoners of war) or are MIA (missing in action).

On Wednesday, May 13, he was pulled from class and sent to meet an administrator in the parking lot, where he discovered his flags had been removed and placed in the bed

For most of his life, Lyndon McLellan has been in the business of country stores—the types of stores where the employees know customers’ names by heart and workers remain loyal for years and years.

His parents owned a general store and grill, and McLellan began helping out there at the ripe old age of 9. Then, 14 years ago, McLellan decided to try his hand at the family business and purchased his own store in the heart of the Bible Belt, naming it L&M Convenience Mart.

Business has been good for McLellan, and though L&M, located in Fairmont, N.C., began as just a convenience store and gas station, he’s since expanded it to include a restaurant that serves

Watchdog Podcast: Breaking the Bank–Public workers are new American royalty

Share

by Eric Boehm at Watchdog

Breaking the Bank is Watchdog.org’s weekly look at the national public pension crisis, how it’s affecting state and city budgets and what can be done — if anything — to fix it.

In this week’s episode, hosts Eric Boehm and Steve Greenhut take a step back from the usual number-crunching and budget-busting to ask a sociological question: are America’s highly-paid public sector workers a new form of royalty?

Okay, they’re not going to be wearing crowns anytime soon, but there’s a noticeable and growing class divide between government employees and everyone else. It’s a situation that has been worsened by the public pension system, which taxpayers must pay into but don’t get much in return.

Make sure you don’t

Pension reform promises $18 billion savings, but questions linger

Share

by Eric Boehm–at Watchdog

After what was touted as a historic vote in the state Senate, Pennsylvania is still a long way from getting any relief from its public pension problems.

A major pension overhaul bill cleared the state Senate along party lines last week, but it still needs to make it through the state House and get a signature from a skeptical Gov. Tom Wolf before becoming law.

Even then, much the bill’s $18 billion in promised savings could be wiped out by a legal challenge in the state courts.

“If this bills gets passed, as written, and signed by the governor, someone will definitely sue over it,” predicts James McAneny, executive director of the Public Employee Retirement Commission.
