Every year when Americans file for their tax returns, the federal government allows them to deduct their state and local taxes, including their property taxes.

That may sound good, but it has the effect of encouraging state and local governments to tax at higher levels.

Instead of having to pay the full cost of their taxes, state and local taxpayers who itemize their deductions can force taxpayers

On the eve of the release of their tax reform proposal, GOP leaders are considering keeping the property tax portion of the state and local tax deduction as part of their plan.

This “compromise” could end up making home ownership less affordable for middle-income Americans.

As lawmakers debate which tax deductions to eliminate and which to keep as part of a

Tax reform is supposed to be about lowering rates and getting rid of deductions and credits to help generate higher economic growth, and to let Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.

But now, lawmakers are doing the opposite. They are reportedly putting unfair and harmful deductions back into the package and raising marginal tax rates.

“If passed, the GOP tax proposal would unleash economic growth, create jobs, and increase wages for American workers,” the real estate professionals say of the tax plan outlined by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans. (Photo: Shealah Craighead/ZUMA Press /Newscom)

Nearly 150 real estate professionals from 34 states Monday urged congressional Republicans to pass their tax reform package, saying it would “unleash economic growth, create jobs, and increase wages.”

In a letter addressed to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the 146 signers buck their industry’s trade association with support for doubling the standard deduction and rescinding the state and local deduction, which they say

My friends, On November 7th, election day, there will be a referendum to vote on, with this wording: Proposed Constitutional AmendmentAmending the Homestead Property Tax Assessment ExclusionShall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to permit the General Assembly to enact legislation authorizing local taxing authorities to exclude from taxation up to 100 percent of the assessed value of each homestead property within a local taxing jurisdiction, rather than limit the exclusion to one-half of the median assessed value of all homestead property, which is the existing law?[6]

The Pennsylvania Liberty Alliance has been in the forefront in the fight to get the School Real Estate Tax Elimination Act Passed (SB/HB 76). Two years ago this important Tax Legislation received a Senate vote for the very first time. It failed on a 24 to 24 vote, Lt. Governor Stack cast the deciding “no vote”. Supporters have vowed that a second vote will take place.

Here is the YouTube video of the PLA’s Ron Boltz addressing CEPTA on this important item.

Pennsylvania Liberty Alliance Urges a “Yes” vote on Tuesday’s Referendum

Share

Hello, On November 7th, Pennsylvanians will be voting on a property tax exclusion referendum. Some people are not aware of this ballot question, and others are confused as to what the question is about. The PA Liberty Alliance strongly recommends a YES vote. Here is a short explanation and a little bit of history…

In 1998, the legislature enacted a “Homestead/Farmstead” exclusion that could have provided up to a 50% exclusion of the median assessed value of homestead/farmsteads (i.e. primary residences) within the taxing district. In other words, this could have allowed a property tax reduction of approximately half the median property tax bill in the school district, county, or municipality.

Since then, this exclusion was not used for anything other than the
