Dear Editor,

I have attended the East Penn School Board meetings and have some concerns that seem to have fallen on deaf ears. When Board member Carol Allen brought up the PAYS (Pennsylvania Youth Survey) for grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 at the September 25, 2017 meeting, I was quite concerned about that survey. I was able to acquire a copy of the over 200+ questions and was shocked to read some of them. As a parent, I know I would not want my children answering those invasive questions. Truly an invasion of privacy

Letter Writer hits on current Educational Math

Share

We’re suffering from lack of fluency in basic math By Mary Byrne, Springfield , Mo. The case of mistaken identity with math isn’t between arithmetic and mathematics, it’s between math educators and professionals who actually use mathematics in the world outside of the K-12 classroom. In a previously published Local Voice, Dr. Campbell asks, “Do we really want to spend time anymore on learning times-tables and other purely arithmetic procedures? When was the last time those were used in the workplace, especially where time is money?” Apparently, Dr. Campbell hasn’t observed the inability of young cashiers who can’t calculate change in real time when the computerized cash register becomes useless during a power outage. Or perhaps he’s never waited for a job candidate

Court allows PA school district to continue unwritten policy that violates student privacy

Last week, Judge Edward G. Smith ruled that the Boyertown Area School District can continue to violate the bodily privacy rights of their students.

Boyertown school officials failed to respect the privacy rights that all students have under the U.S. Constitution and Pennsylvania law to use bathrooms and locker rooms without members of the opposite sex present. A court ruling late Friday, denying the relief requested by the students, will allow students of the opposite biological sex to use sex-specific facilities based on how they self-identify.

A telecom technician by trade, Schuylkill County homeowner Ron Boltz is not your typical suit-and-tie Harrisburg lobbyist. He’s a self-taught policy wonk who walks the halls of the Capitol in jeans and polo shirt — burning endless vacation days in an effort to convince lawmakers to abandon nearly 200 years of history and reimagine the state’s tax structure
