Alberta’s Regional Carbon Tax is a Recipe for Disaster

Share

By

The Fraser Institute in Canada recently released my study critiquing the province of Alberta’s approach to carbon pricing. My analysis for Fraser confirms what I’ve been arguing on the pages of IER for years: in the United States, conservatives and libertarians should run from any “carbon tax deal” that promises to shrink the size of government while battling climate change. No matter their promises, in practice government-imposed “carbon pricing” schemes never live up to the guidelines for “efficiency” laid down by their proponents. In this post I’ll illustrate myth vs. reality in the case of Alberta.

Senate Appropriations Committee approves bill to reform how the lieutenant governor is elected

HARRISBURG – The Senate Appropriations Committee recently approved bipartisan legislation with a vote of 21 to 1 to reform the way the lieutenant governor is elected in Pennsylvania.

Senate Bill 133 amends the state’s constitution to permit candidates for governor to choose their lieutenant governor candidate after the primary election – a process that mirrors how presidential candidates currently select their vice presidential running mates.

“In the past, we have seen a leadership team separate into two warring factions that spent weeks not talking to one another” said

Citizens Alliance of Pennsylvania Money Talks When It Comes to Bailing Out the Nuclear Power Industry

This week saw the first in a series of State House hearings on the proposed bailout of Pennsylvania’s nuclear power industry. As we have noted previously, the cost to ratepayers would be roughly $500 million. This latest bailout is on top of the $9 billion in subsidies granted to the nuclear power industry in the lead-up to the deregulation of the Commonwealth’s energy sector in 1996.

Among the voices calling for another round of subsidies for the nuclear industry was former Pennsylvania, Governor Tom Ridge. It was during the Ridge administration that the first steps were taken to open up Pennsylvania’s energy market to

Advancing Redistricting Reforms

I’m pleased to partner with Senator Boscola in reintroducing bipartisan legislation to change how Pennsylvania’s election maps are drawn.

These proposed reforms come after countless meetings over many months with citizens and advocacy groups from across the Commonwealth. I carefully listened to why people supported bills last Session to establish an independent citizens’ commission to draw maps for both the General Assembly and Congress.

Additional input came from nearly seven hours of public hearings of the Senate State Government Committee, which I chair. This feedback was key to a compromise

Judge Napolitano: ‘Julian Assange Is A Hero’

“I have to tell you, in my opinion Julian Assange is a hero” Jack Taylor / Stringer / Getty Images

Hero. Traitor. Crusader. Criminal. Journalist. Rogue. The many conflicting words people use in reference to the enigmatic Wikileaks founder Julian Assange are legion. Following his forced removal from the Ecuadorian embassy in the U.K., people from all corners of the media have either rejoiced with contemptuous schadenfreude or mourned in regretful sorrow.

Over at Fox News, Judge Andrew Napolitano openly hailed the Wikileaks founder a “hero” for using his organization to publish information the “world had the right to see.”

The Real Fraud of Medicare for All

This kind of redistribution is all about the Left’s very twisted interpretation of “rights.”

By Nate Jackson · at the Patriot Post/https://patriotpost.us/articles/62334

In the same week that the lid was blown off of a massive $1.2 billion Medicare scam, Sen. Bernie Sanders decided to reintroduce his single-payer-health-insurance bill — the socialist scam called Medicare for All. What could go wrong?

The bill’s 14 cosponsors include Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Cory Booker, and Sen. Kamala Harris, all of whom are 2020 presidential contenders. It has quickly become a litmus test for Democrats.

Unshackled

By Timothy Buchanan at Renew America

Just when it seemed as if the world was spinning out of control and that the crazy and confused culture of subjective reality was about to prevail in the United States, it all began to collapse. We have witnessed a repeat performance of an ancient drama that has been played out again and again on the stages of human history. The tyranny of wickedness cannot triumph indefinitely.

The fatal flaw of all sinister ideologies and false religions – from mythology to Islam and from liberalism and socialism to communism – is that leaders become so obsessed with gaining power and control that they overplay their hands until righteous people, burdened by their shackles, finally cast
